Mandatory Now: New Lithium Battery Labels for 2021

Posted: 4/2/19 | Category:  Press Releases, Supplies Shops Product Highlights | By:

Does your business regularly send out lithium batteries, either by themselves or as components of a product? If so, it’s critical that the proper labels are applied to ensure safe shipment. The packaging and shipping of lithium batteries is highly regulated to reduce the risk of accident and injury. Failure to apply the correct labels can be potentially dangerous and come with potential fines and shipments being rejected by various carriers.

If your business ships this type of battery, it’s incredibly important to stay on top of the latest regulations. For example, there are new requirements for shipping lithium battery labels that affect the way many businesses can mail these items. Shipments must meet new labeling requirements due to updated regulations. These new communications were added to all the different sets of regulations (whether D.O.T., IATA, or IMDG) at the start of 2017.

When this new rule was originally announced, a two-year transition period was provided to start using the new marks and labels. During that two-year period, you could used either the “old” marks and labels or the new updated ones.

As of January 1, 2019, that transition period has ended. As such, you can no longer use the old lithium battery warning labels; you must use the newest options. It’s highly recommended that all of the old labels be disposed of to avoid accidental use on future shipments.

DL1944 is no longer compliant for air transportation as of December 31, 2018.
