Sales Tax Information - Supplies Shops
SUPREME COURT DECISION
Due to the 2018 Supreme Court decision, the Supplies Shops is now required to collect sales tax in several states beyond our state of incorporation and location of our headquarters, New Jersey. The Supreme Court decision for the case of South Dakota v. Wayfair in June of 2018, ruled that companies without a physical presence (or nexus) in a state may still have economic nexus in a state, and thus a tax responsibility. This decision left it up to the individual states to decide on their own tax laws regarding economic nexus for out of state sellers. You can read more about the opinion from the SCOTUS blog.
ECONOMIC NEXUS
This decision means for retailers such as Supplies Shops, Inc. that the state legislature can determine the threshold of what constitutes an economic nexus and which businesses will need to collect sales tax going forward. The thresholds are typically based on total sales in a state, number of sales transactions, or both. As more states pass legislation we’ll continue to add those states if we meet the thresholds required by law.
States where the Supplies Shops, Inc. will be collecting sales tax:
- California (starting April 1, 2019)
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- Oklahoma
- Pennsylvania
- Washington

Due to the continuing changes taking place as states work out their particular formula for economic nexus threshold, repeat order may have tax charged where in the past no tax was applied to the order.
TAX EXEMPT
The good news is that if you are exempt from sales tax in your state and have a tax exempt certificate, you can send us your certificate and we can put this on file. Your account will be updated so you can place orders online and not be charged sales tax. Certificates can be emailed to [email protected] or faxed to 973-524-6357. We ask that you include your information such as the email associated with your account, or a previous order number if available to help us locate the correct account to apply the tax exempt status.
